10 Songs You Need to Add to Your Holiday Playlist

The joyous season of giving, love, and laughter is just around the corner. You may have already put up your Christmas tree, had a heated debate over who’s hosting Christmas dinner and decorated the entire house with lights, mistletoe and fluffy red stockings but there’s one more difficult task to cover: compiling the perfect holiday playlist.

Though it may seem minuscule compared to everything else, putting together the right mix of songs to get you in the holiday spirit requires a similar level of expertise. The Christmas classics from Eartha Kitt and Michael Bublé are bound to make the cut, but we’ve compiled a list of modern seasonal selections from some of your favorite artists that will freshen up your holiday playlist.

The Christmas Song – Ne-Yo

For those of you looking for an R&B spin on Christmas classics, Ne-Yo has something special for you. This rendition of “The Christmas Song” is only one of many treats from his debut holiday album Another Kind of Christmas. Released in 2019, Ne-Yo wrote 5 original holiday tracks and put his Motown spin on some classics from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and more. Santa Tell Me – Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande released this holiday track in 2014. Putting an interesting twist on the lyrics of Christmas classic “I Want Love for Christmas,” Ari graciously asks ole St. Nick for more than just a temporary love. She wants a love that will make it to next Christmas and beyond.

Christmas in Harlem – Kanye West, CyHi the Prynce, Teyana Taylor

As a part of the GOOD Friday series from Kanye’s GOOD Music Label, “Christmas in Harlem” was released back in 2010.  A fun fact about this song is the original track spanned over 6 minutes with features from a host of artists such as Pusha T, CyHi the Prynce, Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, Musiq Soulchild, Jim Jones, Cam’ron, and Vado. Rolling Stone even included the holiday rap single on its list of “The Greatest Rock & Roll Christmas Songs.”

I Am the Grinch – Tyler, The Creator ft. Fletcher Jones

For your new additions to the playlist, add Tyler, the Creator from the new soundtrack that he helped score, The Grinch (2018). Along with his rendition of the original 1966 song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” Tyler wrote “I Am the Grinch” to explain the holiday season from the perspective of everyone’s favorite Christmas villain.

“Like It’s Christmas” is the first-holiday tune released from the Jonas Brothers since their single “Girl of My Dreams” back in 2007. This cheerfully romantic song talks about loving someone so much, they make everyday feel like Christmas. If this doesn’t make you jolly enough to deck the halls, I’m not sure what will.

Twenty-five years later and Mariah Carey’s ultimate Christmas bop is STILL the go-to holiday anthem. There can never be enough of Mariah around the holidays. “All I Want for Christmas” lands in the no.1 spot on the Billboard Holiday 100 every year. To add some additional cheer to this holiday season, her ‘90s holiday album has been reissued as a deluxe anniversary edition for 2019 with a new version of the video including previously unreleased footage.
