5 Yoga Poses That Help to Relieve Stress

Practicing yoga is a great way to relieve stress, relax the mind and lengthen the body. As millennials, we are always on the go. It can come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. Below are the top five poses that can help relieve stress.

Easy Pose

The easy pose is a beginner level yoga move that strengthens the back and opens the hips and thighs. When you’re having a chaotic day and your mind is everywhere, put down the ice cream, or glass of wine. Instead, sit on the ground, your bed or choose a comfortable flat surface. All you have to do is sit on the ground with your legs extended in front of you. Bend your knees, and cross your right shin over your left shin. Move the knees closer together until your feet are directly underneath them. Interlace your fingers, extend your arms overhead, and stretch.

Cat/Cow Pose

The Cat/Cow Pose is a synchronized breathing movement with a deep stretch component. The position relieves stress from the back and calms the mind. Sitting for a prolonged time can cause all types of stress and tension in your body and that’s where the cow pose can help you out. For this move, get in tabletop position, with shoulders over the wrists and hips over the knees, start to place weight evenly through the hands and legs. Then expand the belly toward the floor.

We’ve all seen babies lay on the floor and grab their feet. It’s so cute, right? I bet you didn’t know that it’s a yoga move that actually helps relieve stress. It’s the perfect pose to keep you calm and centered. To achieve this position, open your knees slightly wider than your torso, then bring them up toward your armpits. Position each ankle directly over the knee, so your shins are perpendicular to the floor, and flex through the heels. Gently push your feet up into your hands (or the belts) as you pull your hands down to create a resistance.

Head to Knee Pose

Stress can cause all kinds of symptoms including depression. Head to Knee Pose calms the brain and can help relieve depression. Also, it relieves anxiety, fatigue, and menstrual discomfort. This pose can be done throughout the day and in any location. For this position, begin sitting on your bottom with both legs outstretched in front of you. Then bring your torso down to your leg.

Child Pose

The Child Pose is a perfect yoga move that you can do in your bed or couch, and in the comfort of your home. This pose centers and soothes the brain making it therapeutic to relieve stress. It gently relaxes the muscles from the front to the back of your body. Begin on your hands and knees, then spread your knees wide apart while keeping your big toes touching. Rest your buttocks on your heels. On an exhalation, bow forward, draping your torso between your thighs. Make sure you keep your arms long and extended.
