Atlanta’s Newest Restaurant Bar.bacoa Brings a New Meaning to Tapas and Tacos

Nestled in the Virginia-Highland community is Atlanta’s newest gem, Bar.bacoa. Housed in the location of the former Cowboy Taco, Bar.bacoa takes tapas to a level of elegance with its chic ambiance and dim lighting. Though they specialize in tapas and tacos, they have so much more to offer.

Interested in trying Bar.bacoa’s menu before the restaurant even opens, a few members of Team NC took a trip to the Highlands and were guided into a euphoric foodie experience.

Starting off our meal, our kind waiters quickly brought out chips and salsa, fried calamari, ceviche, and blackened shrimp tostada. Though all different, the fresh taste and vibrancy were common amongst each plate.

Chips and Salsa

Simple but very impactful, the chips and salsa offered red tomato and tomatillo sauces, which was evident they were just freshly made from scratch. Along with the homemade chips, this duo is not your typical chips and dip.

Fried Calamari

Following the chips and salsa, we began to dive into the seafood options. As super fans of fried calamari, we were highly impressed that Bar.bacoa has mastered the skill of the perfectly fried squid that so many other restaurants often fall short of.

The next bites of the blackened shrimp tostada sent our taste buds into heaven. With only four on a plate, the temptation to order two more was heavy.


Wrapping up our appetizer course, we ended with the amazingly fresh ceviche featuring super green avocados, plumped shrimp, and perfectly diced tomatoes, onions and cucumbers.

Moving along to our main course, we were served a plethora of cultural dished.

Korean Beef Taco

Starting from big to small, we enjoyed the Korean beef taco, fried buffalo cauliflower taco, and the lamb taco. The Korean taco was flavorful and reminded us a Korean BBQ eatery. The meat of the lamb taco was flawlessly braised and lacked nothing in regards to flavor. However, the fried buffalo cauliflower took the cake for its spicy flavor and even fried consistency.

As an interlude to our main courses, we tried the goat cheese fritters. Goat cheese typically isn’t of cheese our choice, mainly because of its uncomfortable consistency. However, the cheese of these particular fritters was finely ground, making the fritters quite enjoyable.

Entering the last servings of our meal, we dined on a fried lobster tail and paella. Beyond the amazing taste of the lobster tail, we were most surprised by the cost. For less than $20, you can enjoy a freshly-caught and meaty tail. The paella didn’t disappoint either. With the first bite, we were transported to fond memories of authentic Spanish paella. Both colorful and fresh, the paella and lobster tail were the perfect end to a hearty meal.
