The sleigh bells are ringing and Santa is getting prepared to make his rounds soon. We’re finding trees and staying up late to find the perfect present for our loved ones. This holiday always brings cheer amongst family and friends. We find joy in making each other smile with gifts, time, and enjoying each other’s company. However, for some, this may not be the reality for Christmas. That’s why it’s so important to give back to your community all year round, but especially during the season of giving! If you don’t want to serve on your own, invite family and friends to make the experience better. We did the hard work and found five places where you can serve and make the holidays special!
Atlanta Community Food Bank
The ACFB is one of the most notable service organizations in Atlanta. This non-profit community enlists over 1700 volunteers a month and service goes beyond food. The Food Bank provides services in local food gardens, assists in the search of economic security, and does product rescues. If you want to serve in different ways, then look no further, the ACFB is immersed in seven different programs to help the community. You can pick vegetables from local gardens, then pack and deliver them for a family in need. Consider this place your one-stop shop to help someone this Christmas!
Best Friends Animal Society
If you’re like me, then you love animals and would do anything for your own. The Best Friends Animal Society feels the same and works year-round to give them the best life. Their mission is to end homelessness and cruelty for most, and eventually, all animals. The BFAS has sanctuaries all across the country that consistently recruit volunteers to support their goals. You may not be able to take a furry friend home with you for Christmas, but you can help in finding them a warm home and tasty treats.
H.E.R.O. for Children
This organization does very special work for children in Atlanta. The H.E.R.O. for Children group is the only community in Georgia that solely supports children living with HIV/Aids. This is a great mission and volunteers actively serve with them to commit to the mission also. HERO for Children has a specific holiday program that allows people to buy children a special gift for Christmas. This will mean more to them than you know to give a child something that they have dreamed of and may not have access to. The organization also hosts an annual holiday party for children to attend. So, take some time this season to celebrate family and the life of children as well!
Our House does a host of things to help the homeless in the Atlanta area. From curriculum to shelter, OH is on a mission to end the cycle of homelessness for families in our community. Our House provides educational opportunities for homeless children in Atlanta as well as shelter for families in general. This organization ensures that families and individuals are equipped with tools to be successful long term. Our House is an amazing community that is helpful during the holidays and year-round too.
Trees Atlanta is one of the oldest service organizations in Atlanta. TA has been around since 1985 and continues to grow and expand across the metropolitan area. I’ve volunteered with Trees Atlanta and I can attest that this company is a big reason that Atlanta remains, “The City in a Forest”. This environmentally driven organization has many branches (no pun intended), that serve the Atlanta area. They have educational and restoration programs across the city that work to give us a better living. With a new logo and tagline, Trees Atlanta is continually heading in a direction of progress for our town. Volunteering with them is a great way to keep our planet happy amidst all the pretty trees that sit in our living room this Christmas!
Service can be really fun and it’s also the perfect reminder to be grateful in this season and every day. Christmas is a great holiday, especially when you make it great for others.
