When it comes to desserts, cupcakes, cakes, brownies, and ice cream usually come to mind. But have you ever thought about taking your favorite sweet treats and putting a twist on them? Female entrepreneurs, Kandace Marie, Founder of My Fair Sweets, and Shawn Brown, Founder of Cheesecaked, are doing just that and transforming the dessert world.
My Fair Sweets
Inspiration for starting a business can hit you at the most random places. For instance, Kandace Marie, the owner of My Fair Sweets, received inspiration at Six flags after passing a funnel cake stand and felt that funnel cakes should be available daily. She, unfortunately, was laid off from her job, but ultimately gave her more time and extra motivation to focus on her dessert business.
Being self-taught through watching countless footage of Youtube, she developed her own technique for baking up all types of delicious treats. She started creating a trendy way to eat funnel cakes by topping them with fried chicken.
However, her signature item was her huge milkshakes that put a twist on your favorite summer drink. For instance, you can order a Peaches and Cream milkshake topped with cotton candy, an ice cream cone filled with vanilla ice cream, fruity pebbles and fruit loop sprinkles, with rainbow lollipops all in one. This is definitely a sweet tooth lovers paradise.
My Fair Sweets has also become a hot spot for Atlanta celebrities. On Marie’s website, you see photos of Nene Leakes loving her birthday cake, and Usher sipping a shake. The bakery has been used as a filming location for Gladys Knight, Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, R&B Divas, Atlanta Exes, Reebok, celebrity stylists, and more. It also offers full-service catering and, you guessed it, milkshake parties. Kandace can be seen on the Food Network and the Cooking Network showcasing her skills. She just recently opened a spot inside Cumberland Mall. If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, definitely check out My Fair Sweets for the best desserts.
Shawn Brown was born in California and is a professional baker. Being a single mother of three, she managed to turn her downfalls into victories. In February of 1994, a life-altering tragedy happened to Shawn and her sister. They were victims in a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver. It injured her sister, and caused Shawn to suffer massive head and body injuries knocking her unconscious, and killed her ten-week-old son, Jakori.
She didn’t let these tragedies define her. She was determined to show her remaining three children that one can overcome life’s most difficult lessons. Her dream was to open up a bakery that specializes in cheesecakes. It became a reality when she opened up CheeseCaked, in downtown Atlanta at the Peachtree Center Mall. Recently, she opened her second location in Buckhead, which offers a Create-a-Cake bar where you can add your own toppings to your cheesecakes.
Cheesecaked specializes in small personal size cheesecakes in a variety of flavors. They have traditional flavors but also have very unique flavors like French Toast cheesecake with sugared brown bacon. She also offers monster size milkshakes. For instance, the “OMG” which is a pecan covered cup with caramel, pecans, brownies, and two cheesecake bars. The options are limitless.
