Is The Bold Type the new Carrie Diaries?

When you’re watching “The Bold Type”, did you happen to be reminded of another show, with the same content? Yeah, we thought the same. Personally, it gives me “The Carrie Diaries” vibes. Both shows are based in New York at a magazine office, featuring young adults living their best life, exploring their sexuality and discovering who they really are. Even though both shows have their own distinct personalities, it leads me to question is “The Bold Type” the updated version of “The Carrie Diaries”?

The Carrie Diaries

“The Carrie Diaries” is a prequel to the highly acclaimed show, “Sex in the City” and set in 1984. The viewers get an inside look at the iconic character, Carrie Bradshaw, as a 16-year-old. Carrie lands an internship in Manhattan and if you love the original HBO series, you know the rest of the story. But in her younger years in Manhattan, she meets Larissa who is a stylist for Interview magazine (Carrie’s favorite). The art and fashion world and people of the late night begin to have a real allure for Carrie. It’s a fun coming of the age show about a teen juggling her friendships and romance with her fashion and career life. It’s also a great throwback show for all the eighties fashion, music and culture.

The Bold Type

“The Bold Type” centers around three women in their twenties in New York City, who work at a magazine inspired by Cosmopolitan. It tackles political and personal issues ranging from race to sexuality. Unlike “The Carrie Diaries”, the culture and climate are completely different and it shows. Kat is a 21-year-old Director of Social Media. Sutton is an editor’s assistant with an interest in fashion design. Jane is becoming restless with writing sex pieces and aims to do more serious journalist work.

Both shows have similarities from location, to showcasing different fashion trends. As well as showing friendship and how it goes through trials and tribulations. It doesn’t seem as though the “The Bold Type” is the new Carrie Diaries, but it’s more of a modern-day spin-off. Especially since the characters are older and already in their careers.

In “The Carrie Diaries”, the apartment life isn’t realistic of a writer’s salary in New York, unlike The Bold Type who shows a more realistic living situation. As well as it breaks down stereotypes of female bosses being mean and unrelatable. “The Bold Type” tackles deeper issues including politics and sexual assault. “The Carrie Diaries” showed what living in New York and Connecticut was like in the ’80s. Themes that were prevalent in that time as teens were learning sexuality, being in school, and an introduction in the fashion industry.  Both shows have excellent writing and depict each decade successfully. Currently, “The Carrie Diaries” is still showing on Netflix and “The Bold Type” is currently airing on Freeform. Happy Binging!
