What You Should Know About Jordan Peele’s Remake of Candyman

Where are all of the horror fans? In an era of remakes from IT to Chuckie comes the classic horror film Candyman. The original Candyman followed a college student, who befriends a girl researching superstitions. She learns about Candyman, a knife-wielding figure, Urban Legend, who eventually becomes her stalker. Now, the movie is getting a new spin from the creative mind of Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and the director of Little Wood Nia DaCosta. Here’s everything you need to know about the remake.

Why Peele Decided to do the Remake

Monkey Paw Production was founded by Jordan Peele in 2012. Monkeypaw commits to bringing groundbreaking storytelling, visionary world-building and the unpacking of contemporary social issues to its films. They’re going to be producing the remake.

Jordan Peele has redefined the horror genre with Get Out, and his latest film US. When asked the question about his feelings on recreating the iconic Candyman film, Jordan Peele had this to say,

“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre,” said Peele in the press release. “Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia DaCosta at the helm of this project is truly exciting.” (Cinemablend)

Is Tony Todd reprising his role as Candyman?

Who wouldn’t want the original Candyman, Tony Todd to reprise his role? He brought fright and terror to our eyes in the early ’90s. Nearly 27 years later since the release of the original movie, fans still want him to reprise his role.  However, Yahya Abdul-Mateen is the rising actor who will take the leading role.

This role for Abdul-Mateen comes right after his successful performance in Aquaman. He also made an appearance in the Netflix original, The Get Down, and the Oscar-nominated movie, The Greatest Showman. He has some big shoes to fill. There are also rumors of another rising star and If Beale Street Could Talk actress, Teyonah Parris, is in negotiations to star opposite Yahya Abdul-Mateen.

Recently, Todd tweeted that he had spoken with Peele on the telephone about a possible appearance in the new movie. The actor tweeted that he has yet to sign on officially, and his involvement is still up in the air. Hopefully, he makes an appearance.
The Plot

The remake will be a spiritual sequel and will address toxic fandom. The film will take place in the new gentrified Cabrini Green, where the old housing projects once stood in Chicago. Win Rosenfeld will co-produce the film, while Nia DaCosta will serve as the director.  When asked about his connection with Peele and the film DaCosta had this to say,

“I think something that we [Peele] connect on a lot was the way we view horror and our love of horror. I love ‘Candyman,’ but also just like breaking down what horror is, how it’s represented, what it means, and why it’s important,” DaCosta stated to MovieWebb.

Candyman begins production in Chicago Spring 2019 with a release date of June 12, 2020.
